Privacy
Your privacy
White Water Wasted is a personal, non-commercial surf site. There are no accounts, no adverts and no tracking cookies. Here's the little that does happen, in plain English.
If you share a session
The "Share your session" form on the Share tab asks for:
- your name or nickname
- your email address, but only if you choose to give it
- the spot, the date, a star rating and your notes
When you press Send, it goes to my email through Formspree, a form service, which keeps a copy under its own privacy policy. Nothing is published automatically. If I add your session to the diary, only your name, the spot, the date, the rating and your notes appear. Your email is only used to reply to you, and is never shown.
Want something changed or taken down? Send a note through the same form, with your email so I can reply, and I'll sort it.
If you leave your email in the cap check
After a "yes" in the cap check on the Home page, you can leave your email for a heads-up if the caps happen. It reaches my email through Formspree in the same way. I only use it for that heads-up. It's never shown, shared or sold, and I delete the list once the caps go on sale, or once I decide not to make them. Ask through the "Share your session" form any time to have yours removed sooner.
Counting visits and cap votes
The site uses GoatCounter to count visits and taps on the cap check buttons. It doesn't use cookies or store anything in your browser, and it doesn't keep your IP address. I only see totals, such as how many people tapped "Yes" and which reasons they picked under "Why?", plus broad details like the country, browser and which site sent you here. It can't tell me who you are. If you pick "Other" and type a reason, I see the words you wrote, so please leave personal details out.
Things your browser loads from other services
Like most websites, this one pulls a few things in from elsewhere. When your browser asks them for something, they see the usual technical details, such as your IP address:
- Surf forecasts and tides come straight from Open-Meteo.
- Fonts come from Google Fonts.
- The globe's map tools and coastlines come from jsDelivr.
- Some photos come from Unsplash.
- Videos hosted on YouTube, if there are any, use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode and don't load until you press play.
Links to other sites, such as Surfline, The Wave, surf camps or Google Calendar, only take you there when you click them.
What stays in your browser
The site remembers a few choices so you don't have to make them again: your surf level, UK or World, metres or feet, table or graph in Plan a day, and your best time in the Ride to shore game, and your cap check answers. These are kept only in your own browser and are never sent anywhere. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.
Questions
Ask through the "Share your session" form on the Share tab, with your email so I can reply.
